The Rudder/Attitude
For those of you new to this blog, I’m writing a series about You are the Boat, an analogy I wrote about charting a course toward a life worth looking forward to. Each week I’ll write about the different parts of the Boat, starting the beginning of the year with the Ship’s Wheel/Heart, then the Captain/Guide and now, today, the Rudder/Attitude.
The rudder directs the boat, just like your attitude directs your life.
Your attitude is the only thing in your life that you truly have total control over.
Best-selling author Seth Godin lists attitude as the first step in the hierarchy for success.
Think about walking into a party. If you walk in thinking “Oh this is gonna suck! Nobody’s gonna talk to me! I hate this” your face and body language will reflect that and then other people aren’t going to react very well to you. They’re not going to trust you and you’ll just prove yourself right. And yeah, it is gonna suck.
So now what…….
Jen Louden shared this note from Sarah who was writing about savoring…..”noticing what you’re feeling, especially when you’re working toward something you want, is really valuable. Because when you’re aware of an attitude, or a fear, or some unhelpful self-talk, you can shape a different experience.”
You can shape a different experience.
Experience is another word for life.
You can shape your life by keeping your attitude adjusted appropriately.
This doesn’t mean you should pretend everything is perfect.
That’s bullshit and we both know it.
It means thinking about how your attitude effects your life, and everyone else’s around you.
It means being mindful of your actions and reactions.
It’s no fun being around someone with a stuck rudder.
Some suggestions to help adjust your rudder are…….take a walk, do the Stretch, play, create art, listen to music, dance, get a drink of water, have a healthy snack, go to the bathroom, clean a closet, snuggle a pet, call friends, talk to family, take a deep breath and get some fresh air.
What do you think? How do you adjust your ‘rudder’?
Before I end this post, I’d like to share a couple of quotes that I think you’ll enjoy.
“There is little difference in people, but that little difference makes a big difference. The little difference is attitude. The big difference is whether it’s positive or negative.” W. Clement Stone
“Sometime’s life’s Hell. But hey! Whatever gets the marshmallows toasty!” J. Andrew Helt
I hope you have a Fantastic week, my friendly blog reader!!
