Commitment

Today is Wednesday, which means it’s time for the Inspirational word of the week.

Commitment (noun) 1. a promise 2. a pledge to a position or issue 3. an agreement or obligation

My son and his friend were getting ready to go out ice skating yesterday afternoon. As Garrett struggled to get his ice skates on, his friend said “It’s taking some time, but you’ve sure got commitment.”  I was thrilled and shocked to hear this come from an 8 year old. He not only noticed the struggle my son was having, but the dedication to work through it in order to go out and play.  Wow!

One of my favorite movies is the 1991 hit the Commitments.

Filmed in Dublin, Ireland with a bunch of unknowns, it tells the tale of Jimmy Rabbit, a young man with a passion for soul music. He pulls together a band, and with the help of  Joey “the Lips” Fagan,( a veteran trumpet player), and promotes them through-out Dublin. Although egos end up breaking up the band, their commitment to becoming professional musicians gives them all an experience that transforms them forever.

That’s what true commitment does.

commitmentCommitment takes time, effort and dedication. Mix them all together and you’ve created a valuable life experience.

In June of 2009, I made a commitment to posting on this blog twice a week  Despite the fact that not every single post has been stellar, I’m proud of what I’ve put together. This blog has proven that with time, effort and dedication, I can learn more about myself, in order to grow into who I’m supposed to become. When I started, I didn’t know that I wanted to become an inspirational writer and speaker. Although I’m still unsure of exactly how it will all happen, I know that my efforts will pay off.

This past year, I put together the Stretch, the Magic Wand Handbook and a You are the Boat presentation. This year, I’m committing to marketing these, along with my art and Tibetan prayer flags, into a business named Current Inspirations.
